 Entrance to the property

In 1926, Antoine Vergnes purchased the Domaine de Martinolles, a property comprising 17 hectares of farmland with vineyards planted on the richer soils and cereals and fodder to feed the work horses on the poorer areas. The vineyards were grouped around the buildings and planted with several tradtional grape varieties such as Carignan, Aramon, Alicante, large black etc...In those times the wine was lended when the grapes were picked.

In 1940, when the troops were called up for the second World War, Léon, his son, left school to work on the farm. A few years later, having acquired a few adjacent plots, the farm had grown twice as big and the Domaine became exclusively a wine-growing concern. The vineyards were mainly planted with red grape varieties. The wine was made on the premises and sold to wine traders as was customary at the time. Only grapes of the Mauzac variety from the "blanquetière" were made into Blanquette, the local "owner's specialty. In 1973, Léon decided to make bottled wine. For your information:"Blanquette" was invented in 1531 by the monks in Saint-Hlaire Abbay.

Henri Guilhem reports in his book" La Blanquette de Limoux", published in Paris in 1951, that a document written as early as 1531 already mentioned "fragons of blanquette" sent from Saint-Hilaire. The local archive of the Aude area kept in the city of Carcassonne also houses a precious manuscript that dates back to 1544 mentioning "four pints of blanquette", and these documents and manu others incontestably bear witness to the unchallenged know-how of the monks of Saint-Hilaire and the age-old history of their dry Limoux wine.

It is even said that a certain Don Pérignon, a monastery bursar from Hautvillers near Epernay in Champagne country came here e century later lo learn how to make wine with the Benedictine brothers. But, on a more serious note, another manuscript dating back to 1578 mentions an order for a very important person, the King's Provost Marshall, who didn't hestate to pay twice as much for Blanquette fraom Limoux as for claret.

So everything encouraged Léon to make this divine beverage. At this point in time, although they were still youg, his ons were also attracted by the idea and decided to join their father's business once they had finished school. Meanwhile, Léon started to replant the property with new Mauzac wine plants in 1971.

In 1975, 1976 and 1977 Philippe, Christian and Jean-marc were born. The purchase of 30 extra hectares of land, from Domaine de Lamoure and Domaine de Plan Pujade, also located in Saint-Hilaire, stepped up the production potential. The first Chardonnay,Chenin and Pinot Noir vine plants were planted. From the very beginning the choice was made to plant nothing but plants of the highest quality and that choic was maintained. Over a period of 30 years 65 hectares of the Vergnes'vineyard has been replanted. Léon and his sons decided to hire an oenologist:quality has always been their prime concern.
In 1984 Evelyne, then Charles, came along to enlarge the family...

Since then the Vergnes Vinyards have never stopped investing in quality by modernising the winery with the purchase of pleumatic presses, stainless steel vats, temperature regulators, ect.
New vine plants of the Merlot, Syrah, Grenache and Cabernt varieties are now being planted to make the red Limoux AOC appellation wines. Over 300 000 bottles of wine are produced on the property.
600 olive trees and around a hundred truffle oaks have also been planted to add to the charm of the Domaine.
All year round you will be welcomed in the former cellar of the property that has been fitted out as a wine tasting celar. Through our enthusiasm we will show you how to discover the range and depth of our wines.
The winery bears the logo " Caveau duPays Cathare" ( Winery of the Cathar Country) and " Site remarquable du Goût" (Special Landmark of Good Taste).
